HEIC to JPEG Explained: Is There Any Difference Between JPG and JPEG?

2026-04-28·heic2.tools Team
You've probably seen both .jpg and .jpeg file extensions and wondered what the difference is. When converting HEIC files, should you choose JPG or JPEG? Here's the short answer: they're the exact same thing.

JPG vs. JPEG: The Historical Quirk

Back in the early days of computing, Windows required file extensions to be three characters or fewer. The proper name for the format is JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), but the three-letter .jpg extension was created to comply with Windows limitations. Mac and Linux systems had no such restriction, so they used the full .jpeg extension. The format is identical in both cases — same compression, same quality, same everything.

Does It Matter Which One You Use?

Not at all. Both .jpg and .jpeg open the same way, display the same quality, and work with the same software. Choose whichever you prefer. Our converter outputs files with the .jpg extension by default, but you can rename them to .jpeg if that's your preference. The file content is identical.

What About HEIC to JPEG Conversion?

Converting HEIC to JPEG is the same as converting HEIC to JPG. The format handles the same way regardless of the file extension you use. The important thing is making the conversion, and our HEIC to JPEG converter handles it smoothly.
